Hello! I'm your time zone assistant. Ask me about the current time in any city, zone conversions or daylight saving history. 🌍

Everything About Time Zones

Learn what time zones are, how UTC offsets work and why daylight saving time is still a topic of debate.

🌐

What Is a Time Zone?

A time zone is a region of the Earth that observes a uniform standard time. It is defined by its offset from UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). The Earth is divided into 24 main zones, but in practice there are over 600 due to national borders and historical regulations.

UTC vs GMT — What's the Difference?

UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the international atomic time standard. GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) is the solar time observed at Greenwich. Although UTC and GMT are nearly identical today (differing by fractions of a second), UTC is the more precise standard used in programming, global IT and aviation.

🔄

Daylight Saving Time (DST)

Daylight Saving Time (DST) is the practice of advancing clocks one hour forward in spring and back in autumn. It is observed in the US, EU and many other countries. DST significantly complicates time conversions — modern applications must rely on up-to-date IANA databases.

🗄️

The IANA Database

IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) maintains the official time zone database (tz database / Olson database). It contains over 600 zone names in "Continent/City" format (e.g. Europe/Belgrade). The database is updated whenever governments change the rules and is freely available to developers.

💻

Czas w IT: Epoch & Timestamps

In programming and databases, time is most commonly stored as Unix Epoch Time — the number of seconds elapsed since 1 January 1970 (UTC). This eliminates server-side time zone errors. The timestamp is only converted to the local time zone on the user's device.

✈️

Jet Lag & Travel

Jet lag is a disruption of the circadian rhythm after crossing multiple time zones. Doctors recommend adjusting your sleep schedule to the destination time a few days before travelling. A flight from Vienna to Tokyo shifts time by +7 hours (winter) or +8 (summer). Travelling west is biologically easier than east.

Time zones are critically important for global business, programming, aviation and communication. Understanding how they work helps avoid costly mistakes when scheduling meetings, stock trades or flight timetables.

TimeZoria AI uses the browser's built-in native engine (Intl API) and a local IANA database. No network delays — everything works instantly, for free and without tracking!

FAQ — Time Zones

Officially there are 24 main time zones, but the IANA tz database contains over 600 named regions (e.g. Europe/Athens, America/New_York). This is because countries and autonomous territories use fractional offsets (e.g. India/Kolkata is UTC+5:30) or have historically changed their rules.
The converter uses UTC as its base: local time is converted to UTC first, then the destination zone offset is applied. Our converter automatically and precisely accounts for DST changes, which can shift the offset by ±1 hour depending on the time of year and region, using the browser's native Intl object.
Yes! All core time zone features (search, conversion, dashboard) run 100% locally in your browser and are completely free. The AI module requires your own API key (e.g. OpenAI, Anthropic), stored only on your device. Without a key the assistant operates in a limited offline mode.
In the dashboard, click the star (⭐) on any time zone card — it will be added to your favourites. You can filter the view by clicking the "Favourites" button. Data is stored locally in your browser (localStorage) and will be available on future visits.
The app supports: Anthropic Claude, OpenAI GPT, Google Gemini, Mistral AI, DeepSeek and offline mode (no API key required). The key is entered once in the chat panel and stored locally in the browser session — it is never sent to our servers.
