Wrocław — Lower Silesia, Poland

Wrocław (Polish: [ˈvrɔt͡swaf] ; German: Breslau [ˈbʁɛslaʊ] ; also known by other names) is a city in southwestern Poland, and the capital of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship. It is the largest city and historical capital of the regions of Silesia and Lower Silesia. It lies on the banks of the Oder (Odra) River in the Silesian Lowlands.

In 2025, the official population of Wrocław was 672,545, making it the third-largest city in Poland. The population of the Wrocław metropolitan area is around 1.25 million.

The city's history spans more than 1,000 years. It emerged as an early medieval settlement and became part of the Piast-ruled Polish state in the late 10th century, later developing into a major centre of Silesia. From the 13th century, migration from German-speaking regions contributed to the city's development, and German gradually became its predominant language.

In the 14th century, the city passed to the Bohemian Crown within the Holy Roman Empire, later coming under Austrian and Prussian rule before becoming part of the German Empire in 1871. In 1945, after World War II, it became part of Poland; most German residents fled or were expelled, and Polish settlers arrived. Wrocław...
